Rachel Reeves suggests pensioners can afford winter fuel payment cuts
The Chancellor defended the decision to scrap winter fuel payments for 10 million pensioners as part of Labour’s efforts to balance the books. The payments will no longer be universal and will now be means-tested instead, with only pensioners in receipt of pension credit eligible – discover how Labour could take away your state pension.
Dog walker allegedly killed by children had complained about anti-social behaviour
An 80-year-old dog walker allegedly killed by five children had previously complained to police about anti-social youth behaviour. Bhim Sen Kohli, 80, was walking his dog in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, near Leicester at around 6.30pm on Sunday when he was “kicked in the neck”. He died on Monday night.
Twelve migrants die after boat capsizes in Channel
Gerald Darmanin, the French interior minister, said 12 people had died, two were missing and several injured after the boat, which was carrying more than 60 migrants, sank. The dead are believed to include three children. The French coastguard said more than 50 people had been rescued after a boat got into difficulties on Tuesday morning.
