The Telegraph’s Ukraine: The Latest podcast, launched by the late David Knowles, has been nominated for a leading media award.

The podcast, which Knowles presented alongside colleagues Dominic Nicholls and Francis Dearnley, has been nominated for a Podcast of the Year prize at the Society of Editors’ Media Freedom Awards.

The nomination is one of a number earned by Telegraph journalists, including photographer Simon Townsley, whose work has taken him to Ukraine, Afghanistan and the West Bank.

Robert Mendick, The Telegraph’s chief reporter, has been nominated in the Journalist of the Year category for a string of scoops, and columnist Suzanne Moore is in contention for the the award for best broadsheet commentator.

‘Tenacity, intelligence and bravery’

Dawn Alford, executive director of the Society of Editors, said: “Once again we have been astounded by the exceptional standard of entries for this year’s Media Freedom Awards and the tenacity, intelligence and bravery of our colleagues across broadcast, national, regional and online platforms.”

The Society of Editors is an organisation with nearly 400 members, including a range of people in editing roles across national, regional and local newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. The society aims to celebrate and protect media freedom.

The society’s shortlist reflects the popularity of The Telegraph’s work, which was recently celebrated at the 2024 Publisher Podcast Awards, where Ukraine: The Latest was named the Best News Podcast.

Tributes were recently paid to Mr Knowles, following his death in Gibraltar on Sept 8, aged 32.

He joined The Telegraph in 2020, and became head of social media, in which capacity he helped to launch Ukraine: The Latest after the outbreak of the war in 2022.

The Ukrainian embassy in London paid tribute in a post on X after the news of his death, stating: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of the Telegraph journalist of Ukraine: The Latest podcast [David Knowles].

“His dedication to reporting the truth about the war in Ukraine and his commitment to telling the stories of those affected by it will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. Ukraine mourns this profound loss alongside you.”
