Russians surround Ukraine’s frontline fortress

Russian forces have now surrounded the Ukrainian frontline “fortress” of Vuheldar in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, which they are trying to capture for the first time in the war. 

Russian military bloggers have been celebrating the advance of Russia’s army towards the town. 

On Sunday, Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s military, dismissed the commander of Ukraine’s 72nd Brigade defending the town. 

Colonel Ivan Vinnik is said to have been earmarked for promotion within the Ukrainian army.

10 die in hospital attack

At least 10 people were killed in a drone attack on a hospital in the Ukrainian town of Sumy, near the border with Russia, on Saturday.

Videos showed rescue workers picking through rubble looking for survivors. 

There were also Russian glide bomb attacks on Zaporizhzhia, a city in southern Ukraine, over the weekend. 

A missile strike on a village in the Kherson region also killed three people.

Ukrainian Supreme Court judge killed

A Ukrainian Supreme Court judge was killed on Saturday on an aid mission near Kharkiv. 

A Russian drone struck the car that Leonid Loboyko was driving in. Ukraine’s Air Force said that it shot down all 73 Russian drones fired at Kyiv on Monday morning.

Russian forces said that at least one man was killed in the Belgorod region by a Ukrainian drone.

Ammunition depot ‘storing Iranian missiles hit’

Ukrainian forces claim to have hit another Russian military ammunition depot inside Russia. 

A spokesman said that Ukrainian drones had struck the depot in the Volgograd region, in south-central Russia. 

He said that the depot had been used to store ballistic missiles from Iran.

Russia has denied that its arms depot in the region was hit by Ukrainian drones, although eyewitness accounts reported a large fire. 

The British Ministry of Defence has said that Ukrainian drone attacks have slowed Russia’s momentum on the battlefield. 

“The strikes will almost certainly cause, at a minimum, short-term disruption to Russian artillery and small-arms munition supplies,” it said.

Zelensky’s Victory plan not a winner in the US

Volodymyr Zelensky returned to Ukraine after a week in the US presenting his ‘Victory plan’ to Joe Biden, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. 

US officials were said to have been unimpressed with the plan, which focused on trying to persuade the US to give it more weapons, but Mr Zelensky appeared unfazed. 

“October is the time for decisions,” he said this weekend. After being ignored by Mr Trump earlier in the week, Mr Zelensky held a meeting with the Republican Presidential Nominee on Friday at Trump Tower in New York City.

Mr Trump has said that he could speak to Vladimir Putin and end the war on his first day as US President if he wins the election in November. 

After meeting with Mr Zelensky on Friday, Mr Trump said that he wanted a “fair deal made” to end the war.
