A body has been found in the search for a 14-year-old boy who went missing after swimming in the River Mersey.

Daniel Halliday was jumping waves with his elder brother and a group of friends when the current swept him downstream on 30 June, Merseyside Police said at the time.

He became separated from the group near the radar tower off Crosby Beach, Waterloo, the force said.

The search was stood down the next day.

Merseyside Police said a body was found by the coastguard off New Brighton on Monday night.

It added: "Although the body has not yet been formally identified, officers remain in contact with the family of Daniel Halliday, 14, who went missing at Crosby beach on Sunday 30 June."
