A third child has died following a house fire in east London.

Two other children died after the blaze broke out in a terraced property in Napier Road, East Ham, just after 8.30am on Saturday.

The Metropolitan Police said one child was pronounced dead at the scene and confirmed on Sunday that a second child had died in hospital.

A third child died in hospital on Monday, the force said.

Two people remain in hospital, and another person has been discharged and is being treated as an outpatient.

The six people involved are believed to be members of the same family who all lived together at the address.

Newham Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz said the death of the third child adds to the "deep grief and sadness felt by our community here".

"There really are no words to express how as a community we are reeling from the shock and horror of what a house fire can do," Ms Fiaz said.

"On behalf of everyone in Newham, my continuing condolences to all those who know and love the family afflicted by this horrendous tragedy."

She said the council has visited local schools that the children attended to offer support and it is also working with the London Fire Brigade.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to the blaze on 13 July, which damaged the ground floor and half of the first floor of the terraced house.
