A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder over the stabbing of a 32-year-old mother at Notting Hill Carnival.

Shakiel Thibou was charged with attempted murder, violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Metropolitan Police said.

The mother, who is still in a critical condition in hospital, had been attending the carnival with her child.

Two other men have been charged in connection with the stabbing. The three men are brothers.

Sheldon Thibou, 24, was charged with violent disorder, possession of a stun gun and assaulting an emergency worker.

Shaeim Thibou, 22, was charged with violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker.

The three men, from separate addresses in Hammersmith and Fulham, west London, have been remanded to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court this morning.

Police said five more people were stabbed and 230 were arrested on the closing day of the carnival in west London on Monday.

Notting Hill Carnival, which began in the 1960s, is one of the longest-running street parties in the UK, and culminates in a large parade on the Monday, filled with vividly costumed performers, music and dancing.

Around 7,000 officers were on duty for the bank holiday weekend event after the force said there would be a "very significant policing presence" this year.
