Former rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit has left reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs after failing to make the team's 53-man roster.

The 23-year-old has now signed for the Jacksonville Jaguars and will feature for their practice squad.

The former rugby winger, who represented the British and Irish Lions, scored 70 points for Wales in 32 appearances for his country.

At club level, Rees-Zammit made 77 appearances for Gloucester and scored 210 points in total.

But Penarth-born Rees-Zammit made the shock announcement that he would leave rugby union in January this year, ahead of the Six Nations championship.

His country went on to finish last at the tournament.

The Welshman joined the NFL's international player pathway aimed at giving elite international athletes the opportunity to compete at NFL level and improve their skills.

The ultimate aim is to secure a place on a team's roster, but Rees-Zammit missed out on a place with the Chiefs, who he had initially signed for on a three-year deal.

Rees-Zammit had been primarily playing in the running back position, but will be a wide receiver at the Jaguars and will wear jersey 84.

His move means he could get to play in London later this year, as part of the NFL's commitment to staging more games outside of the US.

Rees-Zammit told Sky News earlier this year that his decision to quit rugby was the "toughest" he had ever made.

He previously said he had "no preferences on teams" but wanted to be "at a club that supports [him]".
